Shrine of Hafiz Jamal

The Hafiz Jamal Multani Mosque is named after a Sufi saint of the same name who was born in the early-mid 18th century and died in 1811. Multani was a disciple of Khwaja Noor Muhammad Maharvi (1746-93 CE), a Sufi saint of the Chishti order. Although Multani was primarily interested in spiritual matters he was also known as an excellent swordsman who was equally adept at the bow and arrow skills that proved useful during frequent Sikh raids upon the city. Hafiz Jamal died in May 1811, but it is not clear to what extent his tomb was already prepared. The core of the monument is a square-shaped tomb chamber surmounted by a dodecahedral drum and a hemispherical dome. Although both the east and south entrances to Hafiz Jamal`s tomb appear equally plausible as the primary entrance, it is difficult now to determine which entry was originally paramount due to the later construction of side chambers which now abut the monument. The earliest of the later additions may have been the barrel-vaulted chambers to the north and west which were added by Mauling Khuda Baksh Khairpuri, the wali`s successor. The meeting hall or majlas khana was added at a later date, whereas the gravestone, floor, and east gate of the khanqawere added by a trustee of the tomb. The most recent renovation took place in 1974. The mosque associated with Hafiz Jamal Multani is located directly northwest of the site and probably dates from the same period.
