Gurdwara Sri Choa Sahib Ji

The sacred site of Gurdwara Sri Chowa Sahib is showing its splendor outside Kabuli Darwaza (gate) of Rohtas Fort on the bank of River Ghan. According to a legend, Jagat Guru Nanak Sahib Ji arrived here from Tila Jogian. At that time the place was unpopulated. Guru Nanak started a water spring using his stick. A water spring is called Chowa hence this place was called Chowa Sahib. Later Sher Shah built a magnificent fort and the Gurdwara was the outside Kabuli gate. Even today the residents of the Rohtas Fort use the water of this spring. The present building was constructed in 1834 at the command of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It is a beautiful building with River Ghan on one side and the fort on the other, with forest around the remaining sides. Access to the building is from inside the fort. The Gurdwara presents fascinating natural beauty surrounded by Ghan Nadi, fort, large trees and under bush. Maharaja Ranjit Singh assigned 27 human of land and Rs 260 to the Gurdwara. A fair is held on the 15th of Kata Saudi. The first commemorative structure was built by Charta Singh, who installed asarovarpool, and area for recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. The current building dates from 1834, and was commissioned by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The temple stands at the base of a hill upon which the Rohtas Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Sit is situated. In 2020, a Sikh community organization based in USA, Ranjit Nagara, took over the rehabilitation and renovation of the Gurdwara. The work is being done through international funding via a multicultural team to bring the Gurdwara back to its original form and function as well as adding new facilities.
