SindhFortUNESCO Tentative ListProtected
This fort was founded by the first Soomra ruler of the Soomra Dynasty of Umerkot, Umer Soomra (1356-1390). This fort saw ups and downs in its chequered history. After the Soomras, this fort was occupied by the Sodha Rajput clan. It is said that Rana Perhed of the Sodha dynasty was host of Humayun and his contingent on his way to Persia after defeat by Sher Shah Suri. Kalhoras took possession of Umerkot but it was sold to the Raja of Jodhpur. When the Talpurs came to power, they recovered it in 1813 and it remained in their possession till the British occupied Sindh. The ancient fort is roughly rectangular in plan measuring 288 x 240 m. The fortification walls are provided semi-circular bastions on its four corners. The original walls of the fort are about 5 m thick and with maximum height of about 13.5 m. It is associated with Soomra dynasty of Sindh.
