Owin Fort

This fort is situated around 141 km from Islamabad, on road between Mirpur and Sudnothi, and can also be approached from Islamabad through Sehnsa and Holaar. This is a small fortress, located at a top of the hill connected to the River Jhelum, flowing on its northern side. The prominent surviving features include retaining walls and bastions. Originally, the fort was a double storied building, with a water tank in the south-western portion of the inner building. The fort is square in plan, built over a natural platform, very suitable for such structures. There are four octagonal bastions, standing on all four corners of the structure. A space provided to the western bastion is appearing to be a flat resting place. There are six slits in each bastion. The main gate is constructed with a multi foiled arch. There are remains of 6 steps. The entrance is on the southern side of the fort. The material used is stone constructed with diaper masonry with lime plaster over. The stone might have been acquired from the local quarries. Almost 200 m from the fortress there are two baolis built in sandstone. Both baolis are 1.2 x 1.2 m in size. Presently there are 5 steps from western to eastern side in both baolis.
