Throachi Fort

The fort is located 3 km east of Gulpur village and approached by Throachi Road. The site itself is built up on a rock outcropping, utilizing limestone blocks, and fixed with lime mortar. The fort has followed the natural contour of the rock; therefore, the structure is in irregular plan. There are two water storage pits in the center of the fort which have been excavated in regular shapes in soft bedrock. The entrance wall has two distinct double storied bastions at both ends. The upper floor with its wooden beams and planks is no more. As usual, the walls are crenelated, while the accompanying merlons and the watch towers provided at irregular intervals show signs of a double-storeyed building, connected by limestone stairs. Moving forward from this area we come to a natural flight of steps in the rock which led to a large and seemingly ancient tree under which is a shrine of a local holy man who used to sit in the ruins and meditate. Details on the history of this shrine could not be ascertained, but it is presumed that it was a fairly recent one, but the site itself might have some ancient spiritual importance.
