Chaqchan Jamia Mosque

The Chaqchan Jamia Mosque is located at an elevated point, and can be viewed from around the Khaplu valley unobstructed. The mosque sits rather majestically on a slope, and is built on a raised platform. It is a double -storey structure with two winter prayer rooms on the lower level and the main prayer hall on the top floor. This upper floor is wrapped with a beautiful verandah on all four sides. The mosque consists of a traditional cribbage and-cator technique, involving stone, adobe, timber and mud. The Chaqchan Jamia Mosque is an exemplary specimen of traditional architecture, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful mosque buildings in Gilgit- Baltistan. According to local accounts, Syed Amir Kabir Ali Hamdani constructed the mosque on an old Buddhist site while preaching Islam in the region.
