Darel Valley

The major concentration of petroglyphs situated on the rock spur scattered with boulders at the mouth of the Darel valley. The carvings were representing a time span from prehistoric to post Buddhist period. Prehistoric images of animals, hunting scenes and group of human beings are numerous. The Bronze Age giants and one mask in the style of Siberian Okunev Culture can be dated the 3rd millennium BC. A total of 370 carvings on 46 boulders were recorded by Pak-German Study Group during 2007. Prof. Karl Jettmar describe some bronze/ copper axes, spoons, forks and rods from the villages of Manikyal and Gumari from the vicinity of the same site where graves have been earlier located. Dr. Mughal, Ex. Director General of Archaeology and Museums in Pakistan dates them to the last quarter off the second millennium BC.
