Panj Pai Site

An archaeological site located in Tehsil Panj Pai, 115 km to the southwest of Quetta, situated in a desolate plain in the form of a huge mound, measuring 180x135m with 18 m height from the surrounding level. A trial trench measuring 18 x 3m was excavated by a five-member team of Harvard-Indiana University under Dr. Jamshed Choksy in August 2000. The trench was divided in three sections, each excavated by different archaeologist, but none reached the virgin soil and the excavations remained confined from 0.6 to 1.5 m depths. Potsherd found from the site were similar to those from the Sasanian period, Dam Sadaat-I, Kechi Beg-II, Killi Gul Mohammad-II, Faiz Mohammad-I and Mehr garh-II/A, apart from a large number of Quetta wet ware. The finds clearly suggested that the site remained in occupation during a time frame from 4th millennium BCE to the 5th century CE.
